Silent Night! Oberndorf and Arnsdorf

IMG_7991

Oberndorf was made famous for the Christmas carol „Silent Night, Holy Night!“.
Franz Xaver Gruber, teacher and organist, composed “Silent Night, Holy Night!” to lyrics by Joseph Mohr, an assistant priest in the small town near Salzburg.

On the occasion of Christmas, 1818, Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr performed “Silent Night, Holy Night!” for the first time in the St. Nicholas church in Oberndorf. It became the most famous Christmas carol worldwide. Today you can see the “Silent Night”-Chapel, as well as the museum of local history.

After a visit in Oberndorf I lead you to Arnsdorf, which is only 4 km away from Oberndorf. Franz Gruber served here as schoolteacher and organist.  The Franz-Xaver-Gruber-Museum is located on the second storey of the schoolhouse in which Gruber lived and worked. The rooms contain original furniture and items from Gruber’s time there.
